Sunshine is Good for the Soul

Cheers!

Sol means sun in Spanish. We could all use a little more sun on this frigid January day! I look at this picture and it carries me back to a warmer memory where there was a breeze floating off the ocean and the only responsibility was to make sure to tip the beachside waiter. On a whim, we traveled to one of our favorite beaches in Mexico last October. Isla Holbox is about a 2 hour drive from Cancun and is located on the northernmost tip of the Yucatan. The island is rustic and boasts the most tranquil waters. You can walk out for 1/2 a mile before you are too deep to stand. It is perfect for families as well as for couples wanting a romantic retreat. Powder soft, white sandy beaches surround you and even follow you into town where you have the option to enjoy food from local street vendors or dine in one of the many unique restaurants that the island has to offer. From Argentinian dishes, to traditional Mexican fare, to the freshest seafood, to some of the best pizzas I’ve tasted, Holbox is a melting pot of cuisines. Oh, and how could I leave out the Empanada man who wanders the beach?? Don’t worry about overindulging because you will surely walk it off! There are no cars on the island with the exception of delivery trucks. You will be able to get your steps in or choose to rent a bike to see the sites. If you do get tired, you can hop onto one of the many golf cart taxis available. We have traveled here so many times and each trip has been different. Once we snorkeled and swam with the whale sharks. Another time we chartered a boat and went out to sea in search of Tarpon. We were unlucky that day, but the views were incredible! We’ve seen the flamingoes flying, gazed at the wonder of the bioluminescence, and toured the entire island on bikes, but some of my favorite memories are the ones just like this day in the picture where we chilled by the water and watched as birds and people played among the soft, rolling waves. This is a “no frills” type of vacation where all you need is a bathing suit, sunscreen, flip flops and cut-off shorts. Pack light and come with a heavy appetite for delicious food and fun adventures!
